My guest this week is the drummer for the world famous band Fall Out Boy, Andy Hurley. Fall Out Boy has sold millions of records all around the globe and they have a ton of awards and accolades under their belt including several MTV Video Music Awards and Teen Choice Awards. They’ve played all the biggest venues and TV shows you can imagine including Madison Square Garden, The Voice, and American Idol, and they are touring with Wiz Khalifa this summer while promoting their hit new album.
Andy has been the drummer for Fall Out Boy since 2003, but has also played and recorded with various other metal, punk, and hardcore bands over the years. He has been featured on an episode of MTV’s “Cribs” and has his own record label called Fuck City.
However, what I’m most interested in is the fact that Andy is a plant-based, drug-free CrossFit athlete. Being a vegan, straight edge, CrossFitter myself, I was very surprised to meet someone else that had all three of those things in common.
In this episode we talked about those three commonalities starting with his passion for CrossFit. We touched on some of his favorite athletes and movements, and he even spilled the beans on his CrossFit crush. We also talked about his experiences with being vegan and straight edge for the better part of two decades, and it was really great to hear his perspective on these lifestyle choices.
Andy also talked all about the business side of being a rock star. He spoke about the early days before Fall Out Boy’s fame, and how he’s setting himself up so that he won’t have to work when the band has run its course.
I learned a ton from this episode while getting to know a really interesting person, and I think you all will get a lot out of it as well!
